A to Z - R.E.M. as in Lucid Dreaming

Ok so I was going to do my regular A to Z post but after last night’s dream… I have changed my mind. I figured I’ve stuck true to my guns so why not spice it up once this month.
However, for you loyal followers that are expecting my 5 pieces – here is what they would have been…
Zombies – Resident Evil
Movies – Red Dawn WOLVERINES!!!
Authors, Books, Characters – The Reapers are the Angels
Harry Potter – Resurrection Stone
Norse Mythology - Ragnarök

R.E.M. – Not the band but the sleeping state of mind that I enjoy the most. Dreaming is my most favorite things to do. Why? Because I am one that can LUCID DREAM.

[A lucid dream is any dream in which one is aware that one is dreaming. In a lucid dream, the dreamer may be able to exert some degree of control over their participation within the dream or be able to manipulate their imaginary experiences in the dream environment.  Lucid dreams can be realistic and vivid. *Definition from Wikipedia*]

I went to see a doctor in high school about my headaches. Horrible, pain-staking headaches. While in the CAT scan machine I dozed off. (I have no idea how these machines work) When I awoke, the doctor said that I had huge amounts of brain activity. He asked what I was dreaming about. I explained that I was having a nightmare but kept ‘rewinding’ it so I could change the outcome. “Interesting” was all he said. Interesting? What the heck does that mean? He pulled out a medical book (apparently Lucid Dreaming is not very common and he had to look it up. Mind you, this was 15-16 yrs ago.) He explained that I can Lucid Dream and that it is a normal but not common thing. I have a higher amount of Beta-something-or-other which causes my parietal lobe to acknowledge my dreams consciously.  He then wanted me to explain other things I can do while sleeping besides “rewinding”.
I can replay parts and change the outcome if I don’t like the original. While dreaming, I consciously know that I am dreaming. Ummm, how can I explain – while I am dreaming, me, as the character in the dream, can talk to the sleeping me. “You know this is a dream so help me out here.” Hence the “rewinding”.
I often dream about being awake. In my dream I wake up and go about doing daily activities - getting ready for work, doing chores, etc. It’s called False Awakening.
Do any of you experience being paralyzed during a dream? How about after you wake? Only a few times have I woken from a dream, paralyzed, and still experiencing my dream. One dream in particular – it was me trying to save my brother from death but I was stopped by a demon. The demon was in the form of my brother, sitting on top of me, holding me down. When I woke up, the demon was still there, holding my arms and legs. He was so heavy, I couldn’t move. How do I know I was awake? The image slowly dissipated into tiny specs and finally vanished. Again, how did I know I was awake? My husband knows about my dreams and said “go back to bed, it’s a nightmare.” So I did.
I dream in both black and white and color. Mostly color which is pretty common and cool.
My dreams are the length of my sleeping body’s time. So if I’ve been asleep for 10 minutes, then my dreams are also ten minutes. What I can perform in my waking state will take the same amount of time in my sleeping state. I can also control the length of dream time. Some people can have several dreams in a short span of time, I dream at the same speed as my waking consciousness.
The only thing I can’t remember doing is having an out-of-body experience. My dad has though.
I should really tell you about my crazy sci-fi dream I had last night. It was a doozy. A clash of War of the Worlds, Independence Day, and Star Wars.

Do you LUCID DREAM?

"We are asleep. Our life is a dream. But we wake up, sometimes, just enough to know that we are dreaming."
Ludwig Wittgenstein

  1. I've never dreamed of being paralyzed or waking up that way. I've dreamed of flying. Of falling. But never paralyzed. My dreams are also lucid, yet I don't realize I'm dreaming. Most of the times, I don't remember my dreams. Then again, I am an insomniac so maybe that might have something to do with it!

  2. I will say this I do not get near the 8 hours of sleep you are suppose to get. I get more like 4-5 hours and I am good to go. I do think I lucid dream when I sleep.

Yes I would like to hear about that Sci-Fi dream you had.
What a great personal post today.

  3. I'm with Geeky Daddy. I get more like 4-5 hours. I have freaky dreams too. The other day, I dreamt about mice. Mice! Can you imagine? Bizarre to say the least. :)

  5. I'm at the point where I do lucid dream and can keep it up for an extended period of time. It's freaky, but cool, too - especially if I am having a dream I don't want to end. I did a whole paper about lucid dreaming in college and actually have a story in the works about a lucid dreamer.

  6. Daniella, A mind-bending post. I can't remember the last time I had a lucid dream. It's an exciting topic though and that quote by Wittgenstein is inspiring.

  9. Any form of lucid dreaming I've ever had has been extremely mild.

  10. I've had the false awakening thing. It sucks because I end up feeling so disoriented when I really wake up.

  11. I LOVE Resident Evil (and, as I'm sure I mentioned before) Harry Potter. And REM is one of my all time favorite bands. Ever.
